ABOUT THE VILLAGE THEATRE

The Village Theatre is Golden Bay’s great little community in the heart of Takaka. Since its inception in 1984, Takaka’s iconic Village Theatre has put on a great show for Golden Bay movie-goers. Founded on generous donations of time, money and plain hard yakka, our rural cinema has not only survived but, in the hands of a charitable trust, has flourished into a star of the Bay’s quirky cultural scene. And we do much more than just screen films- we double up as a playhouse, concert hall and meeting place.
In summer, the little venue packs out with visitors from all over the world taking in the biggest blockbusters, while on cold winter nights it warms the locals with varied programme of the latest releases, piano recitals and live theatre. No matter the season, the special experience is loved by all who treasure the mix of comfy second-hand sofas, beanbags and a traditional intermission as a unique counterpoint to the urban multiplex.
But our cosy theatre is no relic of the past. Over the years, thanks to the efforts of our community, the blend of high tech and whimsy has been refined to embrace cinematic digital wizardry while keeping the venue’s off-beat vibe alive. Come and enjoy our state of the art surround system whilst relaxing on one of our comfy couches.

MEMBERSHIP

The Village Theatre has over 180 members, who all help to maintain this important hub of Golden Bay life. It is the support of our members and their loyalty that makes it possible for us to get through the lean winter months. We always welcome new members and are sad to see existing ones go.
Membership is not just a one-way thing. Our members get special benefits too! Members get discounted movie tickets and we also have special Members Nights during the year where we screen a free movie, just for you. These are very social nights, where we share a glass of wine, and make sure everyone has a chance for a good chat, as well as enjoying the shared pleasure of a specially chosen movie.
Annual membership costs $30
If you are interested in becoming a member please email or phone us, or simply enquire at the counter during screening hours.
